      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord ( is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

  1. Finding rock for flux

The wiki lists 4 kinds of rock that can be used for flux. I've gone on a lot of hunting expeditions, and have found almost every rock type except for those four (by picking up stones on the ground). Am I just unlucky, or are these rock types only available deep in the earth?
  2. I guess it's not entirely TFC related, but I thought everyone here would probably be seeing the new anvil models being considered for Vanilla Minecraft. In my opinion, they look terrible compared to the TFC versions.
  3. Wow, I'm sad to see the server go away, but I understand that it is a lot of work running such a server. I really hope that the hooks needed for F.M.P. are added, as your mods are rather essential (IMO) to running a TFC server. When they are, I hope Slink brings this server back also
  4. Anyone else seen this?

Yep, when it comes up on our server, we all talk about it.
  5. Climate Question

Snow makes running from monsters quite a bit more difficult. Warmer climates should (in theory) make it easier to find deserts for sand and jungles for wood, if you need lots of those items. In my experience, the temperate climate at spawn is too close to the equator to have snow, and I've found jungles at almost any latitude. I've actually seen fewer trees as I moved nearer towards the equator. Unfortunately, this is all anecdotal evidence. It would be interesting if someone actually did a survey on a large world based on latitude.
  6. It's a shame that command blocks aren't in the game yet. We could have a command block that would take players from one spawn site to the other. I'm sure that someone out there has made a server side mod that would do it that does not require Bukkit. The problem is just finding it.
  7. Wiki Discussion and Proposed Changes Thread

Cidd, I like the new page! You should probably mention that Sphalerite will boil if it gets too hot. Even using low-temperature burning wood will move it into the !CAUTION! region, but it should be safe there, unless the temperature is raised further by bellows.
  8. Initial Shelter

Actually, if you have 2 kinds of logs, then you only need 4 logs in each pile. In the first pile, you put one log of type 'A' in each slot. Then in the next pile, you put in one log of type 'B' in each slot, and then just alternate as you build up. Also, if you are building your stack against a wall, then you only need one log of each type. Just shift click the wall, and the new log pile will be created, regardless of what is underneath it. Lastly, if you are building a house with log piles as walls, you can always put 4 logs into each wall piece, and then after you finish, remove 3 of the 4, if you are that worried about wasting logs. Once again, none of this applies to version 49. I suppose we are just entertaining ourselves with the discussion
  9. Good Mining Practice

That always worked great for me in earlier versions, but since version 51, the range has been increased, and finding the ore under the rock is a lot more difficult.
  10. Dirt and sand sliding off I hate it

At first, I was unsure if I liked the dirt sliding change, but I've made up my mind now that I am in favor. This is the main reason. I'm one of those people that has kept my dirt hut long after I should have upgraded. Now there's real penalties to using dirt, and I like that. The second reason is charcoal. Charcoal has always been tedious, but now it actually presents interesting problems to solve. The only negative is that dirt can no longer be used for pillaring up (when harvesting fruit trees or reaching ore that is high in a mine). Wood blocks can be used, of course, but they only stack up to 8. Cobblestone can be used, but it's slow to remove. I'd love to see IC2-style scaffolding added for these situations
  11. Initial Shelter

Bassets, keep in mind that the information above is only correct for versions earlier than 51. Once you upgrade to 51 or 52, you'll need a saw+log to make a beam. bloodravenD's comment about using "logs instead of logpiles" doesn't really apply to you either. With 49j, you are not able to place logs, you can only place log piles. With version 51, right clicking with a log will place it once again as a log (same as in Vanilla Minecraft), and log piles are only placable using shift-right click. I'm not sure why he says that logs are better than logpiles for construction though. Log piles are much easier to remove than logs in v51+, and they keep monsters out. Maybe the blast resistance is lower??
  12. Dirt and sand sliding off I hate it

I assumed that wood pillars was obvious, so I didn't mention it. Wood is clearly what we are supposed to be using to build our first house, and it seems obvious the dirt/sand change was to force us to use wood. The problem is that wood is just not as easy to come by as dirt. Turning logs into planks is a 4:3 ratio, and it goes through a lot of axes. You can build with logs directly, but then removal of walls is horribly painful. We all know these methods, the complainers here are just saying that they are too hard :/
  13. Getting your first ore problem

You're experience is atypical, but certainly not impossible. I've used the sluice method in 4 different worlds. I've managed to always been lucky enough that the first place I build sluices produces ore. I have always gotten about 40-60% ore and 40-60% gems, whether I use sand or gravel (gravel is supposed to be a slightly higher ore ratio, but I haven't seen a strong difference). After comparing your results with mine, I think it's safe to say my luck has been better than average with sluices, and yours has been worse. With the latest build, picking up rocks seems to be a better method than sluices for getting your starting ore. There are regions with ore and regions without, and both are fairly large. I assumed that a "region without ore" could not be larger than about 500x500, but that's just based on my experience of starting from scratch 3 times in v49+ builds. It is possible that your luck is just far worse than mine. After playing through TFC a few times, I realize the most important part of picking a spot to settle is rock type. Unfortunately, I don't believe that the ores page on the wiki is correct. We've been asked not to look into the class files for updating the wiki, but I believe that copper can generally only be found in extrusive layers, and tin can only be found in extrusive layers and granite layers. Long story short, just look for extrusive-type rocks on the surface (Andesite, Basalt, Dacite or Rhyolite), and then you should be able to find everything you need to get into at least the bronze age. The last time I "restarted from scratch", I started on a granite layer, which gave me plenty of starting metals (tin and bismuth), but then I was stuck without copper. I searched a ~1000m radius for extrusive surface rocks, and somehow found nothing. I eventually just began travelling in a straight line, and finally found Rhyolite 4300m from my home base. So, I certainly have a sense of the frustration you have felt. I play on a public server, and have seen a lot of people that log on for the first time and immediately ask if they can move into a "town". A lot of people play the mod with the mindset that they will have to join a group to advance, and you may just want to do that, if you don't quit now. Good luck
  14. Does clay only appear in certain biomes?

Push F3 while you are in game, and you will see a biome listed. The world gen is supposed to be completely determined by "layers" now, so I assume that the biome listed on the F3 screen is simply calculated by the evaluation of the layers at that point. I don't really know how the clay is generated, but it could be based on that biome value. Maybe only "river" and "lake" have clay?
  15. The tiny little TFC Planet.

I don't know what's so hard to understand here. The map has poles, but is still flat. If you ever reach the edge, you'll fall off. No one who has ever fallen off has lived to tell about it, though. According to Einstein's theory of general relativity, an observer cannot perceive the difference between a force applied from gravity versus a force from the relative frame accelerating. The flat world does not create a gravitational force upon Steve, it is merely accelerating through space upwards with an acceleration equal to 9.8m/s^2. The atmosphere is held in place with Dark Energy. All joking aside, the physics match exactly what you see presented as fact on the Flat Earth Society's FAQ!!
  16. Dirt and sand sliding off I hate it

EDIT: Posted to the wrong thread!!!
  17. Uses for Ores? Gems?

Gems are far easier to acquire with sluices than through standard mining, and, as far as I know, there's no particular strategy for getting them other than using sand instead of gravel. When we finally get a use for gems, I hope that acquiring them will be a bit more strategic. Maybe gem types could be tied to the types of rock or dirt in the area, similar to ores.
  18. Rocks yield knives

This almost always happens when someone updates from one version to another and forgets to delete the config files. But, you said that both the server installation and the client installation were fresh. So, I have no idea. You could check the config files on the client and the server, to see if they match.
  19. A big 'Thank You' to the Developers

The statement that originally set you off ("TFC is so great that I almost forget how to play Vanilla!") was just an off the cuff statement. It was not designed to be negative. Making a solid comparison between the two would be a waste of time, but that was never done. If things like this bother you so much that you need to suddenly try to make a line-by-line comparison between TFC and Vanilla, then you really need to work on your communication skills. It's tangents like this that make others "hate the community". Hate is a strong word. Saying you "hate the community" is about the most direct attempt that I've ever seen in starting a fight. You're basically saying that no matter what discussion is happening, you're ready to jump in and take the opposing view, just so that you can cause things to boil over. It's not a good way to find friends, and it is certainly inappropriate for a thread that is all about showing love.Language is challenging, especially in a forum like this where facial expressions cannot be used to convey emotion. In such situations, you really should try to find commonality with others in the conversation, instead of provoking them. I'm certainly not trying to start a fight here. I'm not taking an opinion about whether "vanla is teh suxors" or not. I realize the point of your message was not hatred, and hopefully you have a bit of remorse for wording things that way. Since this thread is supposed to have a positive focus, I really think you should try to say 2 positive things in this thread before you make your next negative. Does that sound fair? Just so that I'm not accused of being a hypocrite, I'll add in a couple of positive statements. TFC is amazing. Thank you Bioxx and Dunk for building it and having the patience necessary to deal with "us".
  20. I'm pretty sure you mean that it's down again. It came up last night after about 5 minutes. As Najual said, the spawn reverted to 0,-10000 after the reboot, and a few players needed ports again :/
  21. Slink, when you have a chance, Joway23 spawned on the wrong side of the equator, and needs a port. Thanks!
  22. Hey, a friend of mine is considering on checking out TFC tonight. Is there a link for v51 that I can give him? The main download page only has the latest.
  23. I'm a YT personality who wants to do vids for TFC

Well, in a guided tour, you'll just be walking, and possibly not even wearing a hard helmet. In all the caves I've been in, there has been quite a bit of sliding and squeezing through very tight spaces. The first caving trip I went on, we actually spent the first 30 minutes slithering on our bellies. After that, there was lots of crawling, and occasionally we could stand. Then, deep in the earth, we finally got to a cavern with a 50+ foot ceiling! Our flashlights were just barely bright enough for us to see the ceiling! To get into that room, though, we had to turn our bodies sideways and slide up through a very narrow gap.
  24. smelting in firepit..

The best way to prevent Sphalerite from reaching the !CAUTION! zone is to simply use 2 firepits. I warm a nugget in firepit A, then move it to firepit B, where it melts into the tray. While it is in B, I start warming another nugget in A. I use the 2 firepit method for any of the Tier 0 metals (for speed), but it is most important with sphalerite, to prevent reacing the !CAUTION! zone With tin and bismuth, I've actually used 3 firepits, just for speed. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I can make Bismuth bars faster using 3 firepits than I can using a single bloomery.
  25. Finding clay problem!

The last time I had trouble finding clay, I had this rather steep hill near me. Every time I went out searching for clay, I would go either to the left or right of the hill, and then I would always come back a different way. I probably spent 4 minecraft days searching for clay. I checked probably 15 lakes, some of them being huge, and not a single one had clay. One time I came back the same that I left (near the steep hill). It turns out the whole back side of the hill was clay. I literally had 200 blocks of clay that were only 10 seconds away from my house the whole time.
