If porting TFC to it were an option, I would be over the moon. I fear that, right now, that wouldn't be possible even if Bioxx wanted to as a lot of the basic engine features aren't there (might be wrong though )

I'm just gonna go ahead and say that I am pretty much as far from a griefer as you can possibly get (if anyone has seen .hack//Sign, I'm basically Bear in every multiplayer game).

However, one of my most favorite memories of Minecraft is watching a giant forest burn to the ground to clear enough space to build a town.

I miss the fire also .. It would lend a nice aspect to war as well (although sadly, this goes hand in hand with making griefing easier :S)

Ok, I'll concede that point. The line is pretty thin though from my point of view.

It is a thin line. I am setting up an RP server and I have faced that challenge myself. It's very much a contextual situation.

I have opted for making non faction sponsored theft bannable, making thieves agents for hire. They are still punishable by law if faction sponsored, but it is fully allowed and encouraged as a method of subterfuge and "hidden warfare"

This is a prime situation where I would never ban the player, but imprisonment would be useful

There is room for more than one play style but it would seem that if you are doing things in a proper RP setting then people would also just obey being arrested for RP purposes. If not then the people who are not obeying it are not RPing properly (Did I mention I play MMOs almost exclusively on RP servers??? PvP RP servers at that ).

This is more along the lines of which is more worth while to the mod. New adventure dungeons to go and find? More creatures in the game? Some new form of building? Or a mechanic that will be used by a small portion of the people who play TFCraft?

And yeah, I am a cynic

It's more about the RP aspect of actually gathering up a posse and tracking down a criminal to beat them into submission (though I admit, this could be done without this mechanic, it would just be a bit more awkward at the end when you have to tell the guy to go to prison from his respawn )

As far as the additional features go, I would like to see a balance between them.. I think the whole dragging thing is too difficult to be feasible, but if it were easy to implement in a form, I don't see why not ?

Because I am not against ideas the community wants simply because they hold no worth to me.. So far I see nothing in Beta 3 that interests me but there is clearly a lot of discussion in and around this area. I always loved that quote from the movie Primary Colors.. I am not against a good idea just because it wasn't mine.. In this case I am not against the community thinking an idea is good just because I do not. Just for this level of control though... It just does not seem worth the bang for the buck so to speak.

On a side note, we brought the topic up in IRC, chatted it over, and are now here posting... So we are doing what you asked us to do... maybe we shouldn't be?

One final note.. My position on staff is to annoy Bioxx and make sure people don't annoy each other as much as is possible on the internet.. Nothing I say should be taken as gospel or the like as Bioxx and I disagree on quite a few things in TFCraft.. Its his mod, I just chime in with my opinion like anyone else

Completely agree. The 'ideas' being debated for Beta 3 are pretty damn insane for trying to in-game self-control and accountability. Most of us in the IRC channel chuckle at that entire thread.. and this thread makes me ... well feel more dumb for having read it.. but I will stop at that as that is pretty sugar coated

Your word carries a lot of weight here as a member of staff. If you really think something is stupid, tell people. Don't just sit and laugh about how stupid you think it is.

I'd rather be told an idea was stupid early than spend hours working on it with others, then be told it is stupid as we begin to resolve it.

maybe becouse its most used in france, austria and bavaria ( old empires/kingdoms/ big vine exporters) and its a damn hard work, the 2 plants have to be familiar, at least the same order/family depending on the class

No go. Got an IDE and the dev kit installed, but the program that's recommended to use to decompile minecraft's jar files won't work properly, and I can't find any help on google.

It wasn't a poker face, and I don't much appreciate my words being twisted to imply something about my opinions. I told Arthur the same thing I told you. If you think that reflects on the quality of his work, the same reflection would apply to yours and mine as well, seeing as I have said nothing about it in comparison to the other two.

Correct. And my contribution is that any in-game "feature" regarding punishment of griefers is unnecessary and possibly even ridiculous. Swift, brutal, and effortless is the way to treat those people, not making it "fun".

This suggestion isn't just about dealing with griefers. The ban function wouldn't be removed and people like you could easily get rid of them with that.

What about those of us who like RP servers ? This suggestion would be a total boon in the form of a sensible method of law enforcement. We (or at least I) don't want to ban players for raiding one another and destroying each others town (if done in a proper RP setting), but I might want to punish them in a semi realistic way (which also allows their mates to break them out).

You (and Crysyn I suspect from his cynicism regarding the suggestion) evidently don't play a style of game which would be suited to this, but that doesn't mean it is a stupid or invalid suggestion. Just saying, there's room for more than one playstyle in this game ¬.¬

I'm downloading netbeans. Since TFC uses the PlayerAPI mod, it should be simple enough to implement. Let me see what I can do -- I'm a C programmer, not a Java one, but I know enough about OOP to cobble this together, hopefully.

Another potential route is to force them to become part of your civilization, losing their autonomy as a town, but keeping their lives

Yet another option would be to force them to become your vassal. Subservient to you, but still with the majority of their autonomy .. The potential for political interactions is almost endless in the framework set out for this server

If your former king regards you as a criminal, but your new king shelters you, the only method of your former ruler extracting justice would be assassins or negotiating with your new king for you

Assassins - Should they be able to knock out people for kidnapping too ?

what if... lets say im not running a democracy? What if im running a dictatorship or monarchy? There is no judge or jury, the leader of the land knows all.

Crime is handled on a server wide basis. You have the right to enforce your own laws and such, but the fundamental crimes of the server (murder and theft) are tried at a non aligned court, with a jury member from each faction (where possible). Basically, we will let you try your own criminals for everything but those two, and those two are done this way because they can also be griefing issues, so require admin input

Other than that, you can do whatever you want .. You could even run a dictatorship where using any words that begin with the letter "t" is a crime worthy of the death penalty (should you feel so inclined )

I won't pass comment on your story yet, as I want to see if any others appear, so we can all can compare them side by side without any previous assessment
