ATTENTION Forum Database Breach 03/04/2019
There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again. -
This forum is now READ ONLY! 01/20/2020
As of this post and forever into the future this forum has been put into READ ONLY MODE. There will be no new posts! A replacement is coming SoonTM . If you wish to stay up-to-date on whats going on or post your content. Please use the Discord or Sub-Reddit until the new forums are running.
Any questions or comments can be directed to Claycorp on either platform.

@Chezzik has the technique exactly right. If you have trouble keeping up and the output unshaped metal is getting too hot, take it out until it is no longer liquid and place it back into the input slot as @Just_Another_Guy_ suggests.0 -
I think that having the firepit heating at the max level (with bellows) using hickory or maple does heat the mold to a temp too high for the metal to sustain. Thank you, @sdbaynham.

I had the same problem while smelting sphalerite... definitely going to look into this further.

Well, you have to have a few pickaxes to make a tunnel like that. So, if you don't have a reliable source of ores yet, that may be difficult.

Good work. Now, I would build a minecart rail.

Honestly, like IRL, you've gotta have a bit of luck to run across these deposits. I often dig a 2x1 vertical shaft at the junction of 3 or more biomes, and run into at least 1 deposit of something around the 100 level. If you dont find anything, try somewhere else.

I haven't seen any hostile mobs yet...

Look better.

Yep. Chisel first to make the bloomery. Smelting ore from the firepit sucks.

You've gotta find rock layers that contain the ores you're looking for. Do some research on the wiki. Certain ores only show up in certain rocks.

No worries. Take your time. But... you know... hurry up. ;-)

Actually, tundra climates offer an awesome variety of wildlife. I spend a lot of time in the North Slope of Alaska. Summer climates are quite pleasant, with temps reaching 70 degrees (F) and an abundance of birds, large game animals, and insects. Also, due to the permafrost, there are a lot of shallow lakes and streams, which hold several species of fish. Shitty thing is, the summer is very short. 3 months, plus or minus a few weeks, then, it's a proper nightmare for the rest of the year. Last winter, temps dropped below -50 degrees (F).

There really doesn't seem to be ANY sort of food source available to begin the game.

Same. No hostile mobs on any difficulty.

And no textures for the new plants.

I don't think NPCs are a good idea. They often are very unbalanced, and in worse cases, laggy and broken. Not to mention, that would be a HUGE project to write that code...
I'm going back to my original idea that a bounty system be considered. Something akin to Skyrim? You do something bad, and now there's a bounty out on your head.
It won't stop people from comitting crimes, but it will give players incentive to seek justice! I know I'd love to RP a bounty hunter type character that wanders the land, hunting down brigands and collecting fame and fortune...
Some people might choose to start a band of highwaymen, and pillage the countryside, as well.
Others might join forces and dedicate their lives to scattering them and reclaiming their ill-gotten wealth.

Have you had enough flipping over rocks in search of measley small cassiterites? Do you want get down to the REAL mining? Have you scrimped and saved miniscule amounts of tin and finally managed to take your first tentative steps out of the stone age? Great! Now let's get you into the dirt and start PROSPECTING! You will need:
- A pickaxe
- A prospector's pick
- A shovel (probably)
It's EASY! As you wander through this biome, simply right-click on the ground with your prospector's pick (or 'propick' for short)
With any small amount of luck, you'll get a hit. You're looking for ANY type of sample. (Traces, Small, Medium, Large, and Very Large). Once you get this, you're 95% done!
Here's how I find ores:
1)Right-click the next block in your path (keep moving forward in a straight line if possible. If not, turn toward a direction where you can walk forward without having to scale a cliff or swim through a lake.) It will likely tell you the same thing. If you found a Medium sample, keep checking each block until it changes to a Small sample or a Large sample (it may say 'nothing found', in which case, check the block to the left or right of it, or the next block in your path, but keep moving FORWARD)You're looking for the point where the largest sample becomes smaller.
2)When you find the block where the sample size changes, turn around and COUNT BACK 12 BLOCKS. (You may need to start digging into a hill to proceed)
3)Turn left or right (perpendicular to the last path you were on). Start moving forward and right-click each of these blocks until you, once again, find the block where the sample size changes.
4)Again, turn around and COUNT BACK EXACTLY 12 BLOCKS. You are now somewhere above (or below, if you are now underground) the vein.
5)Dig down until you find your ore! (If you've gone 12 blocks down and have not found it, it may have been above you, or you miscounted)
This method works well deep underground, where ore veins are enormous, too.
Now, you may have found only a small amount of the ore you suspected was there. Don't worry! The starter metals close to the surface often spawn in small, scattered formations. Dig into the walls around you and, eventually, you will uncover more.
Good luck, and happy prospecting!

i ve found several surface deposits of native copper, malachite, and bismuthite
i ve noticed however that most surface deposits are fairly massive after you go down following the vain
Hmm. I'm a few days into this new map, and haven't found any copper. Though, I haven't run across any surface Marble or Limestone layers. Diorite, Granite, Gabbro layers have been a bust.

Yeah, seems very difficult to find copper, nickel, gold, or silver in 47F... I also noticed that ore veins no longer spawn above the dirt level where they might be visible without digging... Has anyone else noticed this?

I built 8 sluice boxes in a very short amount of time. in about 5 in-game days i had plenty of small ores...

Maybe control greifers by putting a bounty system in place?
If a player enters your controlled area and takes something from you/ breaks blocks/ sets fires/ etc. he or she gets a certain bounty put on his/her head. The more grevious the offense, the higher the bounty.
The mayor/ sherriff could issue warrants for the offenders, and they would be hunted for their crimes by any player who felt they were up to it. They could kill the wanted person, and return to the sherriff for their reward, as well as loot the corpse without penalty. Any item that was stolen is able to be picked up without penalty as well.
