There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Believable inventory and better storage techniques

11 posts in this topic

Currently, the TFC inventory doesn't make any sense; you can hold more than a cubic kilometer of stone in you pockets, but a chest only holds about a fifth of that. I'd like to propose my idea's that could make this a bit more believable.

The new inventory:

Your Hands:

When you spawn a new character, you shouldn't see that large row anymore, instead there will be two slots, these are your hands. They can hold just about everything, and will be the only things you have to hold things when you just start out. Your hands do have limitations though, some things will be too big for one hand, and will have to be held with multigrasp. Things that would be held multigrasp would be things like the pickaxe, hoe, shovel, scythe, and possibly things that exceed a certain stack level (16 maybe? or depending on the item?). With a multigrasp item in your hands, you may not put anything in the other hand, and the other hand slot will either disappear or be greyed out.

Inventory storage:

Now, when you open your inventory for the first time, you will only see the 2x2 crafting table, your player, and surrounding him on the left side will be the armor slots, but on the right side will be slots for backpacks and other things like it. However, there will be no inventory storage as of yet. You will need to make a backpack or pouch or something along those lines. I know some people won't like this so maybe a world gen option to start with a backpack. When you get a backpack and equip it; you will get one row of inventory, and a pouch will give you half, but would be a cheaper crafting recipe

Weight

Now don't think just because you have four backpacks equipped means your set for life, because everything you carry has weight, even your backpacks. Some items would weigh more than others, obviously, and full stacks would weigh a lot more than small ones (but having four stacks of 16 planks would be the same weight as a stack of 64). Weight would just be an annoyance if you chose to bring everything with you at once, because it would slow you down, make you hungry faster, and, eventually, make you unable to run.

Better storage Techniques:

Now, I bet your wondering, okay, so we had nerfed chest size, and now a nerfed inventory, what do we do with all of our stuff?

Dropping:

This change to the original pressing Q and having the item appear as a despawning entity isn't much different. Now when you press Q it will create a transparent "block" on the ground in front of you that shows up as the item you dropped laying on the ground. You can then drop more items on to the ground or right click it to take out/put in more. These piles can hold about 4 or 5 slots, but can only hold a single 32 stack. If the number items in a stack placed in the pile reaches 32, then you will be unable to place in any more.

Storage Containers:

Currently, we only have chests, when in reality, we have multiple ways of storing and sorting our items.

Backpacks and pouches:

These were already mentioned in this thread, but I feel like they need to be explained in more detail.

Now, first off, backpacks and pouches should use durability, and every time you put an item in, it loses some, but not when you take an item out. They should also have a relatively high durability, and take quite a long time to break, and even if it's about to break, combine them with a piece of string and leather to patch some of it's durability back up.

Bags and baskets

Bags and baskets are storage items that can't be stored in the a backpack (because of their size) however, when held in your hand they provide an extra row of storage in your inventory. When right clicked, bags and baskets can be placed on the ground to provide storage much like a chest. Bags are crafted with leather and baskets with reeds.

Cabinets:

Cabinets are storage blocks that open outward (If you don't know what a cabinet is, go here:

http://en.wikipedia....%28furniture%29) They would be placeable in the wall or on the floor, have a half row of slots, and not be able to be made double. They would be very mass-produceable and you could have entire warehouses with the walls made out of cabinets

Ideas that don't fit anywhere:

Cows drop more leather until proper butchering is in place

If cloth is ever added then cloth bags, backpacks n' such could be added

If thirst is ever required then water skins could be stored in the backpack slots

Give your thoughts and ideas!

Yikes...

I mean biiiiiiig props for the well fleshed out and wonderfully formatted idea, but... ouch dude. This would make starting a new world next to impossible.

I mean I know it's more realistic, but it gets to the point where realism is getting in the way of having fun.

Now, let me make myself very clear - this is an AWESOME idea, and I love how you actually thought of only being able to manually hold 2 things at a time. Brilliant.

But it's just too steep a difficulty curve. It's like if the first set in easy mode on guitar hero 3 had ended with the expert version of through the fire and flames. If you can best the challenge then great for you and we'll all be rather mightily impressed, but some of us want to be able to actually play the game.

I knew this would scare some people, but I thought of this idea after installing an adventurer crafting mod for dwarf fortress. I made an outsider, discarded my spear and knife, kicked a tame kitten to make me an enemy of the civilization, and set out into the wilderness to get terribly lost. With nothing I managed to knapped some tools, kill a goundhog, and make a bone spear, bow, backpack, waterskin, and shield in a matter of days. Most of that time was spent hunting mountain goats for food and leather. Yeah, it was kind of difficult juggling items in my hands when I had no backpack, but I set up a camp where I left all my tools, and that's what I envisioned you could be doing in minecraft until you got your situation together, so I made a suggestion.

The idea of a quick bar is not 'YOU ARE HOLDING 9 ITEMS AT THE SAME TIME' it's more of 'YOU HAVE SELECTED THESE ITEMS, PUT THEM IN ORDER FOR EFFICIENCY.' I imagine that opening my inventory every time i had to switch from pickaxe to torch, from torch to sword, from sword to axe would be a pain in the ass. I like the rest of the ideas, except the removal of the quick bar. If piles were implemented i would happily relinquish a row of inventory space, but until then the inventory is that size to keep the game reasonably playable.

If we were to implement a realistic inventory you wouldn't be able to carry a single cubic meter of stone, that is no fun what-so-ever. You misinterpreted this change in the chests as this it was, in my opinion to move towards specific inventory this chest just be the general storage. Although piles may work decently. But here is the deal this is a creative game if you could only carry a little small bit like that, you spend more time traveling then mining which is no fun, at all. The weight has been discussed, the problem is, is that only two stacks of smooth stone weighs the same as a 747 which is not even close to carry-able we couldn't implement this without it being ridiculous. Agree with fred about the hot bar its there for a reason and that reason is convenience.

However you make up for these ideas with the storage section the backpacks would work but what about rather than stacking on multiple back packs or "upgrading packs" which doesn't make sense, there would just be a ton of things to wear like pants, coats, so forth that could hold these things. If you must choke hold us into the miniature hot bar you should be able to add sheaths, hooks, various loops and so forth that could make these things easily accessible. And if weight must be added it would be based on the amount of clothing you were wearing. Heavy armor and large bags would slow you down but now you would have more protection or storage, depending on the purpose. These ideas would fail miserably without clothing layering however.

I would suggest to everyone to give this idea I second look and search for possibilities it has potential, even if the base idea is rather horrendous.

I did think of this, but couldn't think of a proper way of it being implemented.

Okay, first off, I hope you're being sarcastic, OP. Realism and believable-ness do not necessarily equate to fun and play value. Sure, you could make a voxel-based game where you have to pick up handfulls of dirt and take hours to chop down trees to build a mediocre shack, but would that be fun? No. So limiting the player to just two hands right off the bat is downright ridiculous. I support the idea of backpacks, but something like limiting an un-backpacked person to just their hotbar until they get one is much more merciful, not to mention actually PLAYABLE, compared to just two(limited) slots.

I like the idea of forcing people to use specialized storage, too. Ingot piles are pretty much confirmed, and people have suggested things like barrels countless times so you shouldn't doubt we won't be seeing them, too.

Adding realism to a game that was initially supposed to be more realistic is a good thing, but making everything in it a laborious grind is not.

I'll defend this spudcosmicc if you tell me you have some way of starting at these frighteningly small inventories back to a normal nine slot hot bar and normal sized inventory. If not this idea will make this game excruciatingly boring.

Necroing this because this idea has more potential than I thought, read it again, think about it, it may be scary to not be able to carry a ton at first but it goes back to normal very soon. Plus this furthers the specialization idea if someone were to carry around twenty bags they would be slow I'm not saying to add weight to items I'm saying add weight to bags and armor, so an adventurer/scout would travel light, a warrior might have a lot of armor a sheath and a small bag is all, a miner may carry a ton of bags so he could carry as much stuff as possible. I hated this at first as I'm sure you read, now I'm defending it, think about it.

It would really require a fleshed out cart and minecart and road and move the 2 ton stone block method before its really something to consider. Its not a horrible idea, but as the mod stands currently its not a playable idea.

I'm not saying to add weight to items

Carry large rock makes no sense and can't be done it would suck the fun out of this game I understand that. That is why it shouldn't be added.
