      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

B60 Global Cooling

16 posts in this topic

Died, March 6, 1000. Slept. March 7, 1000, water puddle (my drinking station) was ice. Checked temperature: -2. Running back to where I died, ocean started freezing.

Dieing seems to cause the temperature to drop drastically.

After 10 deaths you can't respawn due to the too cold biome.

Global cooling is a myth.

Global cooling/warming are more of a possible scenario that could happen as a result of this and that. It's a theory not a myth!

btw... a funny quote from the Third Assessment Report Section 14.2.2.2 p.774: "In climate research and modelling, we should recognize that we are dealing with a coupled non-linear chaotic system, and therefore that long-term prediction of future climate states is not possible." just to throw that in. ;)

Really all that says is that there is, strictly speaking, no single numerical solution to the equation, and that with some relative additional time, unknown variables may have too much of the so-called butterfly effect, rendering the known variables inconsequential. A lot of thermodynamic systems run into the same limitation, but that does not stop us from creating some pretty decent models. The way around it is always to run a bunch of approximate models and see what happens. It doesn't give you anything 100% sure, but it might give you 95% sure over a useful period of time.

Iow, it's not really a very funny quote.

95% is a bit too optimistic. What it says is, we have no clue what is happening but we have a theory.

Can you please clarify what are you talking about?

95% is a bit too optimistic. What it says is, we have no clue what is happening but we have a theory.

If they have a theory, then they have a very good idea what's happening. If they had no clue, there would be nothing even closely resembling a theory. 'Theory' is not equal to 'some random idea that looks like it fits the data at a cursory glance'. Gravity is a theory.

95% is optimistic for some systems, not so much for others. The sun - specifically sun spots, let's say, is a system of the same type. The statement you quoted would be equally valid to say about it. Would it be at all reasonable to say that sun spot activity will suddenly discontinue its 11-year cycle within the next decade? No, it would not. We are much more than 95% certain that this cycle will continue because we have no evidence to suggest it won't. We can still say this even though we don't know really all that much about it. More importantly, we can still say this without having any confidence that it will be the same as it is now in a few million years. The same is true of anthropogenic climate change; we might not know four decades out what things are going to look like exactly, but we can see very clearly the direction they are presently going and at what rate and why.

Yeah was going to say the same if another post went that direction. There's an off-topic if it is decided that this tangent should continue. I'm always happy to speak on that particular issue and help clarify misconceptions that are so rampant in north america.

On the OP though... I was watching temp last night while playing and didn't notice anything after a few deaths. That is weird though...
