      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Leather strips, fiber...

14 posts in this topic

I think it's funny that you can just stick a flint on a stick and get a tool, you have to connect it somehow, so I was thinking make some plant fibers, vines, or use flint with leather to create leather strips which then you can use to make tools, so you can connect the wood with flint or metal. Or you could use a flint with a stick to make a "tool stick" which can only then be used to create a tool, something like that. Sounds like a great idea to me, maybe it's not? Tell me.

Also before you use flint for your tool you need to sharpen it by using a rock or another flint, destroying one and creating a sharp flint.

A well made tool doesn't need string if you carve the hole in the head of the tool right (so that it narrows up to the top). Tying a head on with a piece of string is very unstable, as the string is likely to snap (or make the head move out of place).

Ruhl4, I have some experince in that area, you speak the truth, but with stone you are not likely to make a "well made tool", and even if you make a whole leather strips, string or anything like that will make it more secure and durable.

So.... how do you carve the hole then? With bones from an animal or antlers from deers/moose?

You couldn't possibly use the sharp tool head you just made. That would be ridiculous

I didn't really mentioned anything about sharpening a tool (unless I didn't get your post); I was mentioning how is Steve going to puncture a hole into the stone for the stick to be attached to.

the point i've made many times comes into play here, most early stone tools did not have wood handles. those that did have some kind of rod component, did not HAVE holes, they had attachment points to lash the stone onto the stick. (like arrowheads/stone-tipped-spears/javelins)

stone knives really ought not need sticks, because they wouldnt have needed sticks, just grab the stone and cut.

But for those tools that WOULD need it, (axes) strips would make sense, but probably just annoy people.
