      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

so, i've been hanging out here for a few months now, and i've seen this community deteriorate into a trolling, derailing chaos which causes lots of good ideas to be lost forever.

as a sort of solution, i'd like to suggest to crysyn be more harsh in punishments, and to our community to use the report function more on topics that actually present a good idea.

this call is meant to every single forum user, from the newest people to the eldest veterans, we have a off topic section for off topic, keep the suggestions on the rail or let it die, no more derails and especially no more hate derails we've been making lately.

Strange suggestion, comming from someone who participated in a good part of those derails...

Very well, i will try my best in keeping on topic. Again.

yea i know jag, and thats because, even though some short derails are fun, the amount of goodness being lost is too big, and the amount of hate is increasing exponentially, im calling a stop to it.

it does not require a saint to change the world, it requires a human who knows exactly what the sins are, yet recognizes that its wrong.

Isn't that the definition of derailing?

im referring to the fact we should keep our antics confined to off-topic from now on, lest we burn our hands on people like rook, who might come with good intentions, but be utterly hammered for 1 single bad

I guess some people will get a lot more active in the off topic forum than they are right now... *Looks at certain crazy goddess*

Confining one's antics in a spur of the moment... um... moment is harder than it sounds. Even one joking remark is like yodeling under a snow ledge. An avalanche is soon to follow. While I think most derails have had good intentions, I agree that recently the forums have become a volitile posting grounds. Used to be a lot friendlier here.

I'll try to behave.....

...

..a bit....

I really miss TFC. I've been slogging at my thesis for way too long, writing chapters, deleting chapters, and ultimately feel like I'm going nowhere. But I like to pop by the forums to keep touch on the current and I have to agree. To one-who-has-become-a-lurker, it seems things have become rather a lot more distracted, charged, and reactive.

I think this is maybe for a couple of reasons... some of us have seen a lot of suggestions come and go, but good or bad they all disappear into oblivion. There is no separate repository where people can see the most advocated suggestions and in-depth discussions. It would make sense to address this by having a separate fully-locked forum where good ideas can go to not-die. Without it, people will inevitably find it increasingly tiresome and trivial to deal with the same-old same-old.

But also maybe too it is because now we know there is a TFC2 on the way, and nobody quite knows what to expect there. Maybe this has some of us anxious and others unsure what to talk about on here now until we see something. And under such conditions it can be more difficult for many people to separate what is being said from what one feels when reading what was said. It's very human-like, and an unfortunate side of the mode of communication we must all use, devoid of expression and gesture as it is.

Aside from this post I'll remain quiet, I think, until this blows over. I can't run TFC any more anyway (brand new computer and I'm lucky to get more than 20FPS with no further mods) and I'm not sure what I would contribute regardless. But I hope the community can work it out and return to productiveness soon. Good on Killster for raising it.

That was a very well put analysis. I feel like a like is not enough for this kind of intelligence.

I would like to see an area where all the suggestions can be gathered into single-instances. It would help to keep things organized, and coupled with more frequent crack-downs on derailment, we could get a pretty solid set of suggestions that have been well thought out. Then the devs could come through and leave comments/close them in a more organized fashion.

I've only been here a few months as well. I was kind of shocked to see the level of derailment allowed (oh, and I took part of some of them). And I've been part of a few petty arguments that didn't even deal with the topic at hand. I feel like I see far too many petty comments like this: don't use the word 'realism', don't double post, that's already been suggested, Bioxx/Dunk have said no to that, etc...

It seems like a race to see who can correct a post first, without offering any sort of insight into the idea.

Again, I'm guilty of this stuff too; I guess when you're around it you feel like it's the way things are supposed to be, when they're not.

I know I'm not all that active anymore, mostly because of school, but I have noticed things have become worse around here. Derails happen always and get out of hand (we've always had derails, but they were often less destructive and generally more fun, and didn't always happen.) Believe it or not this place was really fun to be in, with scientific discussions mixed in with a few hilarious jokes, and a group of mature people talking about a mod they love.

Some of this hasn't changed, but a lot has, it has gotten more hostile (Yes, eternal was always hostile, but he usually had a half-decent reason) and we reject newbies even more than before, gone are the days of every first post receiving a colorful welcome banner. Instead, we insult newcomers for making a simple mistake and drive them away. (The only way to become involved without getting shunned is to not post a topic for a long time, much like myself. I have made 2 topics, and that didn't happen until my 666th post.)

I know I am not above the fray, I have had my share of raging at a some newbie who doesn't know better or who is being belligerent. I have certainly participated in crap tons of derails, and started probably the single largest one on the forum (see my sig) :/. I have been just as petty as others at times.

But, killster is right, we need to change a few things, and I will do my damn fucking best to be a better member of this forum. We are all human (at least most of us :P), so obviously we are going to make mistakes, and we are going to have the occasional derail now and again. We can limit this though by all moving our fun over to off topic, there is no reason we need to plague suggestions with our fun, off topic works just as well. I suggested a while back that maybe we make some organized roleplaying threads so that we can have our fun there, (the thread is called "A Few Roleplaying Threads... Maybe?"). We can make this community much more fun by making off topic active and keeping our behavior in suggestions on topic and friendly.

So, let's all agree that we are all going to try our best to do better than we have in the past, and be nicer people. Ok?

[P.S. - The #tfcraft IRC room on irc.esper.net is fun too if you want to talk about random stuff and have some fun (or some interesting discussions/debates) with a lot of the people on this forum.]

[Edit: I'm not sure harsher punishments is the best idea to keep the community vibrant and fun, but that is for the staff to decide.]

I'm lucky that I was one of the very few newcomers that, in spite of recieving a harsh welcome, rise much like the elder veterans. None of us are perfect, and that what makes us human. Many, even I, act very snappy and cruel to those wishing to join our little endeavor. I rather not make a speech for the fact others had already performed one on this thread, but we must act like what we were back in the Elder Days (excluding me; I was just a lurker during those days).

well honestly, i think we all had a rather harsh start to these forums, we should probably (oh gods i can't belive i'm actually saying this) be a little nicer to the newcomers, and maybe we wont get so many trolls

I agree. And what do you mean that you don't believe you're actually speaking that sentence (I know I heard somewhere where you were once evil, I believe)?

I don't recall a harsh welcome when I came on board. I was actually quite readily welcomed.

I did partake in a few lambastings though and I feel dirty.

..

I would like to say though that while we all have our different quirks and opinions. We get along rather well for the most part.

Is this scorn or sympathy?

sympathy to the way you were treated, scorn to the manner in which all parties including you reacted upon each other.

I'm not quite on-par with batman.

Oops, we both need to work on our bat skills apparently.
