Support beams made sensible

Honestly, my view on them is this. A beam is a beam, no matter how you paint it up. A horizontal beam is basically the same thing as a vertical beam. For this reason, I see two things that could be done.

1. Make the support beam similar to some tools, in that you set the mode for either horizontal or vertical.

2. Make recipes to convert horizontal to vetical, and vice versa.

Honestly, the latter of the two is likely sufficient. It would be a much needed change, for I have run into situations where I need one kind, but only have the other.

While I agree with your proposal on how support beams should work, here's my advice on getting around it in the short term:

Instead of making a bunch of beams in advance and hauling them with you in the mine, bring a stack or two of wood and your saw. Any time you need beams, just make an 8-set of the needed type. It provides versatility in the beams you have (to prevent being short a given type) and is usually a bit more compact on inventory space to boot (If you were using less than 3 inventory slots for support beams, your shortages are not a crisis of interchangeability).

Or the suport beams could be just logs placed up to suport the cave from caving in , i mean we have horizontal and vertical wood , and it can be of any type , the wood could be used instead of a suport beam item .

You don't even need support beams. Cave-ins are good, they help make the roof higher.

I prefer to be able to find my way out of my mine though. But I guess at the short term, I could bring a saw and logs. I just wouldn't prefer to do that.

Just sayin', Dunk has stated (in one of his livestreams) (check them out! They are quite entertaining ) that the current support beam mechanic is not to his liking , and insensible, as you said. He plans to fix it in the future, or at least did a few weeks ago. (I don't, however, doubt that he still does think that)

Subscribe to his twitch channel, and you will get emailed when he goes live. As for where he streams, twitch.tv/dunkleosteus As for when, he just kinda streams whenever he feels like it.

If you are subscribed to his youtube channel (nikstick22), He posts on there if he is about to stream soon. (This isn't nescecarry, but I just do it. Also on his Youtube channel, he uploads videos of his streams. The ones where he builds the basement of his house (there are 2 parts)are both uploaded to his YouTube channel, and those are the ones where he talks about support beams.
