      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

      There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
      If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
      I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Quick question on bloomery/blast furnace

Does a bloomery and blast furnace need to see the sky, or can they be underground without issues? I'm thinking of building them like parallel chimneys alongside my forge underground.

 

I'm not anywhere near to making them, but I'm designing a new house and it would be nice to build it in a way that these structures are supported.

They don't, but you will probably need a forge which does.

 

Trapdoors will not stop rain from getting on the forge, so making the chimney bent can prevent the rain from getting.

Actually, the wiki blast furnace page currently states:

 

 

A minimal size Blast Furnace is constructed as follows:

  • The Fire Bricks: Two blocks above the ground, construct a "tube" by surrounding the center air block on all four sides. Note: The top of the chimney must have access to the sky.
