      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Hello all.

I recently thought; how about making this mod more creative, by allowing any and all metals to be shaped however you like. Basically, you can try to make an axe head out of a gold ingot, only to find that the axe made from it is horrible at best. This adds an aspect of experimentation to this mod. Want to try to make a helmet out of lead? It'll be bad, but why not? How about a golden scythe? Sure, but be ready for it to break upon it's second use.

My point is that realistically, you wouldn't be restricted from making something with a type of metal. Yet, some are better than others, and that is why you should experiment with them to make sure you are using the best metal.

I think that's it.

Thanks.

1. Don't use the word "realistically," because TFC isn't trying to be realistic.

2. Unless the player is completely brand new to the mod, they will already know which metals are "tool metals" and can therefore make usable items. Adding in this experimentation wouldn't really do much other than angry new players who try to make tools out of the random pieces of ore they find, only for it to break after one use, completely destroying that ore which could have otherwise been used for later purposes.

I can also see this resulting in a handful of people interpreting it as a bug, and submitting reports along the lines of "My pickaxe broke as soon as I tried to use it! Please fix this bug! >:( "

Kitty: everybody knows that gold and lead are soft. If not the first, but the second or third use will kill your tool, you'll understand that you can't use those metals. And if you know how much your tool is broken, you can put it back to forge or something and melt it back to a not complete ingot.

This wont be making a comeback. Features like this are nice in theory and tfc originally went this route. However all it ultimately did was cause us to have tons of new items and recipes for all the metals as well as any associating code to manage them. Then we needed to have new art as well. All in all, it added very little gameplay value since after your first playthrough you'd never use gold for your axe again. I'm very against discoverable features that are no longer discoverable after the first playthrough since nothing changes. It's a cheap gimmick at best. It also caused a headache for me to have to balance and provide maintenance for.
