      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Tomato fix (fruit not vegetable)

3 posts in this topic

I was playing TFC and needed some fruit to increase my nutrients, I found some tomatoes and was very happy but just afterwards I noticed that they are classed as vegetables. This is not a major bug or glitch but some time it would be nice to have this fixed because it annoys me slightly and maybe others.

Before someone else jumps down your throat about this with personal opinions about the use of either a pragmatic or literal definition of "fruit",

Not pointing any fingers >_>

it's not going to happen, and that's something we both have to deal with.

Just clearing this up since Dunk didn't exactly explain why this decision was made before locking the thread.

From the Food page of the wiki:

http://wiki.terrafirmacraft.com/Food

  • While some foods are biologically different from their categories (tomatoes are actually a fruit), they have been placed in the category that is typically used by society. "Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad." ― Miles Kington

Botanically speaking, there really is no such thing as a "vegetable." That term is only really used in culinary purposes. The categories that the foods are currently placed in is their culinary categories, and not their botanical categories. If we put every single botanical "fruit" in that category, we would have very few vegetables left.

In other words, if we made tomatoes a fruit, we would have to make all of the following fruits as well:

  • Green Beans
  • Green Bell Peppers
  • Red Bell Peppers
  • Squash
  • Tomatoes
  • Yellow Bell Peppers
  • Barley
  • Corn
  • Oats
  • Rice
  • Rye
  • Wheat
  • Soybeans

For more reference:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit

Supreme Court Case Nix vs. Hedden: In the culinary sense of these words, a fruit is usually any sweet-tasting plant product, especially those associated with seeds; a vegetable is any savory or less sweet plant product; and a nut is any hard, oily, and shelled plant product.

Currently there are 20 fruits, 12 vegetables and 6 grains. If the categories were botanically correct, there would be 33 fruits, 6 vegetables and 0 grains.
