      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I think it would be nice if rock like mudstone etc. could drop a kind of fossile or a bone.

Agreed. And we should be able to assemble dinosaur skeletons!

I'm only half kidding. (If anyone higher up decided they were up for it, I would open paint and start pixeling like a boss, I swear on my right thumb.) Even if not, it'd be a nice treat to find something different every once in a while.

That would be so cool if we could have pet dinasours... Kind of like wolves...

I'm not so sure I could consider an inanimate skeleton a pet. :U

Thats called the archaeology mod already exists its pretty dang cool really although did you know that most fossils recovered are actually just sediment that filled the cavity where the body was and bones become part of this compound which is why the rock is noticeably different.

here is a list of good fossils that could be added

- ferns (mudstone, siltstone)

- ammonites (shale)

- petrafied trees (mudstone and siltstone)

- brachiopods {anicent snails} (siltstone, mudstone, limestone)

- byvalve clams (limestone and shale)

- ancient fish (siltstone)

- amber (found near petrafied wood or mudstone)

i ll add more as i did a massive project on local fossils from my area two years ago :D

its not the sediment that replaces the animal or plant, but minerals like carbon, calcium, quartz and pyrite

I think there is already petrified wood in the game, though it doesn't do anything.

Anyway, fossils to me would seem mostly like an asethetic thing. I don't think they'd have much use though it would be kind of fun just to collect them and maybe display them.

that was my idea as well, no real use to the player, but something that would look good above the fireplace :)

drops of regular old bones from mining in certain rock could be pretty cool I think

Not sure about the fossils tho, unless Steve can somehow learn something from them.

I mean the dude goes through ages and ages of human development in less than a year, guy must have an IQ of over 300. I'm sure he could figure something out.

perhaps we could have ultra rare fossils like ammolite (opelized ammonite), gilded leaves (ultra rare even irl these fossils are created when mineralised liquids fuse with fossils)

i am not sure what steve could learn from a fossil

That his little 15 minutes of fame on earth is nothing compared to the vast stretches of time where giants have roamed and died for millennia

That's deep but I don't think that will help us until we can do something with these bones like display and analyse them *bump to the thread "Research"* we could just post random facts about the animal as a space filler until we can extend the mod far enough to actually do something with the fossils.

Who says they need to do anything? Just collecting and trading rare oddities could add something to multiplayer. "Say, I'll give you this ancient femur-looking thing for uhh, three dozen brass coins. I need it to finish my collection. :U"

Displaying them and building your own museum would be amazing, but that's just a bonus.

Giving them any sort of practical use wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. (Unless you count certain fossils signifying nearby coal or petroleum deposits a practical use...)

I think most modders put far too much emphasis on having everything "useful". There aren't too many decorative blocks or stuff in my opinion. Fossils and bones could well do as purely aesthetic. Then again, they could be used for something practical as well. Bones could be used to make bone tools for one, but that's nothing new. Besides, it would be rude to the immenseness of the beings that bore them. I can't really think of any good use for bones, let alone fossils. Other than aesthetic of course.

Tools, aesthetics and maybe eventually a merge with archaeology mod that's all I see as well but I don't see any reason not to add them however I don't think they will be high on the priority list.

speaking of decorative blocks, I think that being able to sculpt clay pottery, vases, ornaments and maybe statuettes, busts, figurines (could work with stone as well) would be very cool
