      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

      There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
      If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
      I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

  1. Sticks & Stones

    This will mostly be focused on the idea of the expansion and increased depth of sticks although it will briefly brush over stones as well so that I can use the title. This will be extending the construction update which I was planning to save this idea for however so many people have brushed by it that I feel it necessary just to get out there. Extremely quick summary of expansion of sticks: Place-able sticks. Slightly longer summary: We make a system capable of determining the uses of certain sticks as building materials, tools, and miscellaneous items while also allow structures to be built from these sticks. The Ideas of Sticks: Why is the stick expansion necessary? As of right now our buildings and items make little sense. Stacked rock cubes weren't very popular as you can imagine and log houses certainly weren't popular either, they were used but not by much. Sticks were a hugely important building material but we never use them at all which is rather strange. What are planks being nailed/glued to? Why can't we make adobe huts? The other part is why can we use pine for a bow? Or maple for a tool handle? These things simple don't make sense. Placing sticks: Summary:Place-able sticks Alright I'm going to make this one quick as besides it being the main idea it is fairly simple. Sticks should be place-able on edges so thats only twelve places to put them they would be pretty simple A seperate shift-click pile capable of holding a stack of them would be nice stacks would also be nice. This quickly becomes the frame of many useful things such as item frames, window frames, and other frame-like items. Additionally they would be useful in structures in that, they could be supports(yes these could potentially replace the support system but I will address that in a bit. To place them anywhere besides the bottom four edges you must have string in your inventory. Categories of sticks: Summary: Categorize sticks by size and flexibility Something similar to this was attempted by Bioxx when he gave each individual stick type its own ID but this led to issues so it was removed. However this kind of thing has to happen other wise we are running around with flimsy stick handles. A couple thing went into my idea... We can't destroy the inventoryWe need different typesNot all sticks are the same even if they are from the same treeOne of our most successful rock mechanics is our categorizations​So we categorize sticks, it's as simple as that, I was thinking nine natural types to allow for variation. There will only be two differing factors though just to keep things simple. Those two variables being size and flexibility. Now we can so "okay to be a bow you need to be this big and this flexible" this creates easy categories that are easily understandable but still provide a bit of a challenge. Each tree would have its own set of probabilities of drops so that maples drop flexible sticks for wicker, pines drop big ones almost exclusively, oaks drop strong hard wood.This would also allow several ideas that have been cast out to be brought back. Like wicker, saplings to sticks(flexible small in this case), roots as sticks, I'm sure I'm forgetting more also. Refining of sticks: Summary: Allow sticks to be carved into straighter more useful 'rods' Suggested a million times but needed to be addressed for this to be a true thread about sticks. That idea been carving sticks into more refined rods. These rods would hold the current texture and would be used in a situation where you need a straight stick rather than bent gnarly one. This would include handles. Just a stick with a knife a couple times should suffice for now unless we really want to go crazy. There would be a damage bar that when it reaches zero the item becomes a rod. If put into a pile the damage value disappears to make sure nothing gets too complicated. Basically its a stick with effort put into it. Joining the ideas: Now we have three system that when added together produce even more interesting results Large rods become place-able as supportsOnly strong sticks can be made into rodsWhen sticks are placed their bounding box is slightly askew just so people want to replace them for looksMedium and small rods will be place-able in the center of faces and the entire cube leading to 27 different spots to put them allowing for more control and more in-depth structures(fish smoking racks, tool racks)Dirt and sand can be placed around rods to keep them from randomly falling.Planks can only be nailed to rods Summary of stones: Stones become place-able in piles that replace gravel in terrain gen. Why is the stone expansion necessary? It isn't so much a necessity as it is a convenience, we can place stones but it certainly would be nice to have a pile and if you think about it a pile of rocks is essentially gravel so that makes sense. Extra Stone Ideas Each individual stones hitbox is different in size so we don't end up with a brick lookPre-determined still but just varyingAbout sixteen rocks should fit in gravelWe would need that redo of smoothstone and cobblestone to get this done.River gravel should be able to consist of multiple colors​

  3. Discussion thread for the Combat Revamp

    I'm sorry I'm far too lazy to read this entire thread but have any ideas addressed the main combat problem yet? Aka spam clicking? My finger is getting tired and was hoping a solution was in the pipeline. Seriously where is the combat strategy? "Run forward, spam click, tea bag, run" just a little variety would be nice.
  4. Re-Introducing fear (Part 2)...

    Fear is come about the wrong way in Minecraft, we can't really on details obviously but getting slightly more "active" models brings life to fears rather than just being a lifeless model now we have something that looks alive, hungry, and creepy. I once watched a video of what the minecraft spiders would look like if they would walk on walls, have knees, and let there knees flow in the wind while jumping as if they were actually pushing off and then preparing for a landing and honestly the guy in the video was almost screaming, heck I was almost screaming, it was freaky as hell. How do we react if we see a spider now? Damn spider, leave, nobody loves you. *spam click*. which brings me to another point the hostile mobs are way to common still. The movement underground should fix that but until then I'm tired of walking by flocks of harmless zombies which have evolved into nothing more than an extreme annoyance. If you die to a zombie, everyone laughs, if you die to a skele, everyone laughs. Why? Because you are a frickin' noob. What kind of balance am I looking for? Difficulty of wolves and other smaller animals should be that of the current hostile mobs aka you run from them until you have a camp and at least a decent knife. The sight of large predators such as bears should give people the "Damn, I'm going to die" feeling unless you have an impressive set of armor and weapons, are in a large group, or are hiding somewhere out of reach. Killing them should take tactics not spam clicks. Subterranean hostile mobs would be a rare and frightening sight. A bloodthirsty zombie would be a difficulty without a decent sword. A spider would only be approached if you really had to and even then you would need to be fast and smart to keep it off you, because you sure as hell aren't outrunning it. It is a giant spider for a petes sake most people see a normal spider and scream the sight of a giant one should make you shit your pants. Creeper encounters would be something to boast of surviving even large groups would boast of it.

    I'm not sure I believe him yet but a FTB forum member by the name of kev12east has claimed to have made the entire FTB Ultimate pack compatible with TFC using Custom NPCs. Most of the community is skeptical and/or angry but personally i believe i may need new pants. I understand its not balanced but we have the tools to fix that.

    I'm going to step in here, research in this sense (like TC) takes away from a fundamental TFC idea that being game immersion. Now Steve is researching rather than us researching, or testing or discovering, and then we would have take even more steps towards RPG which if you have around these forums at all, is a badness.

    Agree with Menoch, in America in particular, our problem still isn't the guns but the people that misuse them. Our education system and associated areas would certainly be a good place to start. As of right now I can guarantee you that if I walk from one end of the end of our high school to the other, I would be shocked if someone along the way didn't try to sell me drugs. I don't even do drugs! For gods sake, I am a nerdy Christian (not being religious), why the hell would I want heroine? And its not like I live in compton or something, we are a pretty average high school. And what does Obama care about? Making us pay for the druggies health care. Why would we even take away guns anyways? Who are we taking them from? I'll tell you right now it won't be the unregistered guns, it will hunting rifles, and small pistols that old ladies carry in their purses. Now the gangs, dealers, and half my high school will all be hiding these in their basement. Now when someone gets robbed, how the hell are they going to protect themselves? And now the already busy cops will spend their time chasing some random hicks instead of solving any real issues.

    I have more ideas for this thread but why not have a tool to bring up the health bar? I can't decide on a tool though as ancient medicine had very few tools for examination.

    I'm going to argue once then go back to ignoring you, like everyone else here should. I'll be polite about it to the best of my abilities, I except the same out of you, just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean you can throw a temper tantrum. We all get it, caves do exist in small thin sections, whether flat or tall, I've seen them too, if this game was not made of such large cubes this would be a fabulous idea to be realistic. But what I'm sure your "research" has shown as that Minecraft is a world of cubes and we don't aim for realism. The goal is for us to implement ideas that are both believable and in some way help gameplay. Now here is where I'm going to need your attention, while an occasional 2x2 cave wouldn't look that bad aesthetically, anything smaller than that looks either man-made or like complete shit, there simply isn't enough detail in these large meter cubes for it to look anything resembling the amazing caves I'm sure you have explored. I suppose we could try to use microblocks but isn't as easy as it sounds I would assume. Trust me, I love those tight exciting caves too, but despite being realistic they will make our caves look like shit, that isn't a good trade-off. This adds no gameplay value, makes our caves look cheap, discourages cave exploration, interferes with fundamental ideas of both TFC and Minecraft (believability over realism), was poorly presented, confuses new players, is easily bypassable with a pick, destroys many ideas of future cave expansions, and frankly I don't like you.

    I was not questioning the fact that caves exist, and quite beautiful ones may I add, I have certainly seen a couple but a map of them on the scale that you were implying (based off your vanilla caves) would certainly not look like a bunch of random scribbles all over the place, they simply aren't that frequent. As for the aesthetics like that, while possible, at some point you wonder if its really worth it. Would texture a new block for stuff like that but I'm not sure its necessary although it certainly would be nice. On the other hand is it possible to make variable textures for one block because that could open up a heap of possibilities

    Let me guess thats what caves are like in Swaziland. All joking aside, I would certainly say that TFC caves are more frequent than IRL, but I would love to see evidence to prove me wrong. Until then I see no further necessary discussion unless we move into cave aesthetics.

But it is really that original of an idea or did he likely draw inspiration from TFC, I think its safe to say he has at least seen the mod before, no? Edit: I posted there too, also Krski what you did makes a slight amount of sense but you need to think before you act we don't want rivalry if anything we should be close to this mod, and although the ideas bear extreme similarities there a different purposes to each and therefore are individual and useful each in their own way.
