in my home town there are about 350 geologists and maybe 250 prospectors

its something rural Canadians (and Americans) teach their children. i don't know one kid in my area that has not gold panned at least once.

Why is that? I don't know much about Canada but usually people are not into geology and find it boring. Here we have had a lot of people gold panning illegally, we called them "garimpeiros", in search of gold, some dangerous people. Still today we have that, even in gem "mining" (I can't call those that are literally holes in the ground mines), but they aren't interested in geology or even know what that means. My question is why is that there is such an interest there?

its part of our heritage that has sort of stuck in our minds as a useful skill

its also a good way to get out and explore our land scape (especially in british columbia)

we have the illegal miners as well though most of them are first nations. i my self do alot of prospecting as it makes alot of money if you know where to look

I was trying to know what is the word for prospector in portuguese and funny thing: google translates prospector also to "garimpeiro". I think that geologists and prospectors are the same here.

we can give you english lessons too (like we do for JAG). The sentence should be "I was trying to figure out what the word for prospector in Portuguese is"

Helpful tip: In english, the "is" would go after the "portuguese". The word "know" is used in the context "I know that" but not to describe learning something. You would probably use "figure out", so your sentence would have begun: "I was trying to figure out what the Portuguese word for prospector is"
