      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Fire as a deterrent?

36 posts in this topic

You are wrong. This is wrong. Do some proper research. Most mammals are attracted to fire. They are curious. If you'd ever been camping, you'd see full well how attractive fire can be. When I go camping, we get skunks, raccoons, badgers, opossums and all sorts of other wildlife wondering right up to the fire with us.

WANT. Most wildlife in Australia will run like crazy from fire (due to millennia of natural bushfires). Animals in temperate habitats would probably be less afraid, which I forgot to take into account.

Also, I mainly want repelling torches. Forget about firepits.

EDIT: Giggity posts.

repelling torches? nah, repelling firepits. indeed!

build a fence if you want to repell animals from your home.

The firepit would only protect you as long as you keep feeding it wood which, if you went outside unprepared, might very well be the end of you!

I think the reason why the animals where curious of you Dunk is because they're too used to humans. had it been 10 000 BC they would have run like hell, not just because of the fire but because the humans there might make a meal out of them.

It's the same reason why bears sometimes wanders up to peoples houses and eats from their garbage. They're too used with the presence of humans and knows that there's food there.

Lets not go too crazy on the "put everything that happens in real life into TFC" button here. real life animals might be curious as hell and sit down and eat some marshmallows with you but gameplay wise i'd much rather see them out there in the dark, waiting for my fire to burn out.

the original suggestion was referring to campfires though, if I'm not misktaken; and flailing a stick in something's face isn't going to make it happy with or without fire on the end.

But it won't try to bite a stick that's on fire, and since it's(stick) between you and it's gnawing face, it won't bite you either.

But it is raaapid. It can bite you and remember that wolves are always in packs. Rarely you can find wolves alone and maybe around you can still find a pack.

Yeeeaah, that's why it wouldn't be gamebreaking and over-powered, because it wouldn't be effective against more then one or two wild animals at a time.
