      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I need Dynamite!

43 posts in this topic

In real life, black powder is made with saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal/coal, so I would go with that. But also, in real life, TNT isn't even made with gunpowder, it is nitroglycerin.

to make actual tnt would thus require chemistry.

simple solution to make you feel better would be to just retexture tnt into a barrel of gunpowder and ignore its name.

DYNAMITE is made with nitroglycerin, TNT is made from TriNitroToluene

Hmm, being able to bore holes and blast away rock would be interesting, but kind of pointless since picks dig fast enough as it is.

In what situations are explosives desirable over other methods for these kinds of things?

A few things come to mind...that would be fun doing with explosives

- Make a big cave....dig one-block holes, put dynamite or tnt in, wire it with red dust (or something else)....BOOM....bat cave done

- Bring down a hill or a small mountain....same methode as above, just not so deep

- Make a big sinkhole...

- Underground mapping can be done with explosive

- Zombie (or other) traps

- Perimeter warning system

Explosive mining.

Who needs a pick? grab your TNT, plae it right to the ore, and blow the shit out of it!

A waste of ore? probably. Worth it? Hell yeah!

basically a whole bunch of stuff that requires some rather complicated equipment to aquire!

I'm no chemist, i go looking at wikipedia everytime i need to answer something about this.

Yet i know for sure that gunpowder = eitherTNT or dynamite is just complete bullshit!

I know this most likely because we all learned about Alfred Nobel in middle school.

Actually, Alfred's father tried to use gunpowder as a binding material to nitroglycerine but was unsuccessfull!

Don't really know where Notch where during this class but as a swede he should know the story behind dynamite.

dynamite howto:

- with glass make a few flasks

- go to potion table

- mix up a few potions using a few different precipices and finally get nitroglycerin

- take limestone from inventory and smash it with hammer to get Diatomaceous earth

- gather all the stuff you need for Solvay Process

- use potion table to mix up some sodium carbonate

- combine paper, diatomaceous earth and a bit of sodium carbonate to get Dynamite sticks

oh..wait..i dont have diatomaceous earth and i'm out of limestone....i'll just make some sawdust, that will be good enough.

Ok, now to get to my mine. Its getting dark, i'll have to hury.

jump one block down...jump two blocks down...jump 3 blocks BOOM!!

DAMN...where did that creeper come from......oh, wait...that was ME

I new i shouldn't have used sawdust :-/

------------------------------------------------

hmm...it would be complicated to do, but it looks doable in TFC...and fun :)

and yes, it has nothing to do with black powder.

The thing is, all these ingredients needs to have a stable chemistry table to stand on. if there's gonna be a complex recipe with all these stuff needed, then it shouldn't just result in TNT or dynamite! if you get in deep into chemistry like that then you can't just stop at dynamite! there must be a whole bunch of other uses for chemistry than just dynamite! My point is, don't make chemistry so that we can make dynamite. make chemistry so that we can do everything that chemistry can.

And at that point, it no longer fits in very well with TFC!

Just keep it simple! making gunpowder is simple enough. it's considered chemistry too i know but you won't need to build an entire house full of space stuff to make it. for the love of god, forget about tnt and dynamite!

seeing as he was swedish, I think it's far more likely that only people in sweden learned about him in middleschool

That's what i'm saying. Now where the hell was Notch during this class?

I meant "we all" as in swedes.

How about you can mix sulphur and saltpetre and whatever else you guys like to put in your gunpowder, and then put it on the floor like redstone. A firestarter, and you have a string of small explosions, doing very little block damage, but still hurts. Take some paper and put the gunpowder in it and you have a small explosive, doing a little block damage, and mix them together and you have a much bigger boom.

I love how tnt works in tfc, cobble blocks fly everywhere.

Gunpowder does not explode if it is not compressed, it only burns fast.

Day-dreaming of cubes, screaming out loud he would one day create an infinite cubic world, and running away ashamed when his classmates laughed at him due to this, i guess ._.

That's a little self absorbed isn't it? This mod is made by two north americans, and I would say the majority of our major posters are at least from the new world, north and south america

Historically black powder based explosives actually were used for mining however the earliest record of this was in the 15th century.

wouldn't say that i'm self absorbed. just a bit tricky getting my words across. i'm good at english but still bound to fall of the road and make a few mistakes every now and then.

I have seen uncompressed gunpowder explode.

Now I am confused!

It's all about the right recipe.

If you put more charcoal, it will burn slower and smoke more.

With less charcoal, it burns faster.

And if it burns fast enough, it will explode....kind off

Has to deal with "high" and "Low" explosives.

"Low" explosives like gunpowder burn through the flame travelling through, so technically they just burn quickly while releasing nitrogen gas.

"High" explosives however explode due to the pressure wave travelling through them, rather than the flame front. So the whole bomb explodes much faster and with a more concentrated shock wave.
