Can planks be placed as planks?

I've found that individual planks can be placed as small beams of wood in an 8x8x8 grid within a single block. Very nice.

But is there a way to place a plank as an actual plank? For example, I'd like to use planks as wooden siding for an exterior wall. Is that possible or am I stuck using blocks of planks?

According to their appearance, it looks more like you're placing sticks in the 8x8x8 grid. I have wished for something like what you're asking. Perhaps a mode switch like the chisel, to place it as 2pixel x 8pixel full planks which can be used to construct flat walls, filling one side of a block using only 2 planks. But if I had any hope this would actually be implemented, I'd post it in Suggestions

You could use 4 planks to make a block and then slab it down thin with a chisel, but that's pretty expensive with chisel damage as well.

There's been suggestion on larger planks but I don't think Dunk has commented them. Personally I hope for planks to be 4x2x16 pixels or 4x4x16 pixels (that is, double or four times the thickness that is now).

^^ That. The planks should, IMHO, represent the same size as the planks in the texture of the plank blocks. Right now, they are only half that size.
