Mini-Map Mods: What's your favorite [B79] mini-map, and why?

Sorry but when i hear that a minimap feels cheaty... do you walk around in reality with a 90° viewing angle and maybe 500m maximum viewing distance ?

 

In real life you have orientation because you can spot landmarks over vast distances, you can quickly turn your head around and get a 360° image of where you're at.

In a game you are limited, you turn around quickly and dont remember how much u turned, identical trees everywhere etc ... ofc u get lost!

 

A minimap is a good means to help with that handycap.

It's called paying attention to your surroundings. I personally don't have an issue remembering where all my ore deposits are, or where my house is relative to the other islands. You just remember what the landscape looks like.

Anyone know which version of JourneyMap I should be using?  I had problems with the most recent one (5.1.0) and with 5.0.1.  Both end up crashing my game when I try to use their settings menu in game.

You're using Java 6, which is horribly horribly outdated. Update to the latest version of Java 8. Because you're on a mac, there's a few extra steps you have to do to make sure Minecraft uses Java 8, but a quick google search should tell you what to do.

Absolutely positive. Start up your launcher and click on Edit Profile. It will list there what version of java it is using near the bottom.

 

 

I can guarantee it's pointing at the Java 6 executable, and you need to change it to use the Java 8 one.

I found a set of instructions on how to get java 8 to work on your mac but it wasn't working.  So I tried to backtrack and now I can't even open minecraft at all.  I thought I put everything back where it was supposed to be but something's off.  I get the launcher loaded up okay except that the 'play' button just stays on "loading."

 

And in my java control panel, under Java, there isn't anything below the 'view' button, which is greyed out.

Essentially, I just went from being able to play TFCraft without journeymap to not being able to play TFCraft or minecraft at all.

I really really really did follow those instructions.  At the end there was an option to confirm which version of Java you're running and it told me I was using 8.  And before I followed them I followed the instructions on how to uninstall java just to start with a clean slate.

If I type into the console the command: /usr/libexec/java_home it says that I'm using jdk1.8.0_51 but minecraft wants to start up using java 6 for some reason.

Did you completely ignore what I told you to do? You need to keep Java 6 installed. You need the launcher to launch with Java 6. Then on the Minecraft Launcher you click on "Edit Profile" and set the Java Executable there so when the launcher which used Java 6 to boot up, then uses Java 8 to boot up the actual game.

 

Edit: Re-reading this post made me realize it may come off as a little harsh. Sorry if it did, I didn't intend it to be that way and just wanted to emphasize that the launcher and the launched game use different versions.

Oh boy.  Okay... so I have both Java 6 and Java 8.  They seem to be behaving.  Java 6 opened minecraft's launcher.  Java 8 is running TFCraft.  AND JourneyMap is working.

 

However, now all sticks and rocks look like white blobs both on the ground and in my inventory.  That wasn't like that before.

Are you using a resource pack? That might have also been what was causing your font rendering problem earlier as well. A screenshot would be helpful.

No other mods installed.

I'm not using a resource pack unless one can accidentally use one.

 

I'm gonna load up TFCraft and take some screen shots.

Alright... the problem seems to have disappeared.  If it recurs I'll take some screen shots and post them.

It doesn't hurt to check. Boot up your game and go to Options > Resource Packs... and make sure the only thing you see on the right is Default.

Have you tried updating the drivers for your graphics card? Does it still do it if you switch your graphics to fast/fancy and back again?

 

Edit: Have you tried turning mipmapping off in the graphics settings? All my google searches are pointing to the problem being an old graphics card with outdated drivers that cannot handle fancier render settings.

This macbook pro is only a month or so old.  It has an intel Iris Pro 1536 MB under the graphics section of "about this mac."

 

I'll check out your suggestions momentarily.

Switching from fast to fancy and back didn't do anything but turning off mipmapping seems to have fixed the issue.

What is mipmapping?  Do I need it?

Mipmapping has to do with how textures look at a distance. I usually recommend leaving it turned off because of the way it does the sampling for the distance textures a lot of things such as fruit tree leaves look really odd from far away.

Hrm.  That's strange.  It seems they think it happens when you change the mipmap levels but changing the mipmap levels fixes the problem for me.  However, it only fixes it temporarily.  It doesn't matter what setting I leave it on, if I close the game and reopen it I have to switch the mipmap in order to get rid of the glitch.

 

So I can set it to high or off and it won't matter either way.

 

Not the end of the world but it's a bit silly.
