      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

  1. Keep in mind the scale of that image. Every pixel on it is around 30x30 blocks, or a 2x2 chunk area.

In other words, this little area is is 900 by 900 blocks.

I don't know about you, but I don't do very many builds that are that huge.

Edit: Here's that same island blown up to scale so that 1 pixel equals one block. I've also overlaid a rough chunk (16x16 block) grid. If you use a minimap with this feature, it's a bit easier to compare for reference.

I still feel that on the micro level you cannot travel more then a few blocks without yet another hill.  Early game it is a real pain to find a suitable place to build anything more then a shack without having to do some serious digging.

Below is the flattest area I have been able to find after an ingame week of traveling.  Does the amount of hills and overall terrain roughness decrease or increase the further you go from the equator?

  2. LIES! You are not going to see the ping xD nobody here is stupid enough to give you ip until you accepted

Are you retarded?  When you add a server to your multiplayer list it shows you a 1 out of 5 set of bars so yes I can see the ping without connecting.  Secondly a server should not have to hide it's IP if it has a proper whitelisting system.  The admin of the page told me the server is based in europe which means I would get 1000ms ping anyway, so luckily I did not waste my time applying.

  3. What is wrong with melting tools?  Think about it, if I get a pickaxe in real life and start wacking away at granite till it is blunt and useless %90 of the pickaxe is still going to be there, it's just going to be dull.  There are thousands of videos on youtube of people inheriting there great, great grandfathers axe and refinishing it with some TLC into an axe that is 10x more durable then a brand new axe from a shop, simply because axe makers these days use inferior steel to cut costs.

  4. Smithing isn't really hard at all, just mess about with it and you will learn your own method.  I align the arrows, then follow the rules.  This shows me how many single hits it is from center, I reverse it and follow the rules again and 90% of the time I will get it.There is no real "trick" it's all an estimated science and that's how I like it, in real life blacksmithing isn't a perfect science, it takes alot of practice, mistakes, and finesse.

  5. Why are the islands so broken and jagged?  That has been my one biggest issue so far, it is impossible to find a place that is remotely flat to build a base, also way too much water.

  6. note: I would rather have rabbit mobs than this, but if rabbit mobs are not coming, or coming in the far future than this would be nice.

Not a fan of actually having actual mobs, I would really rather placing the snare down and it having a X amount of chance per hour of catching a rabbit, right click the snare with a knife and it will give you rabbit meat,I say this for a few reasons, the AI for rabbits would be difficult to code they will be either too easy to catch or too hard.an item based random chance snare would allow you to use the same code as gold panning to stop an area from being too overworked.Rabbits can not breed or respawn so it will be very easy to simple kill off an entire area and no rabbits would ever return, which is unrealistic and would be bad for servers as idiots swarm your area killing off every living thing.

  7. I understand that...I'm thinking of sinew for things like binding sticks into stronger support beams, or threading through holes in a hide in order to stretch it for tanning.  I've been far and wide in my current world and have seen exactly zero sheep.  I basically have to hunt spiders for my string.

From what I can tell sinew was not used for large scale things like tying beams together.  Instead some sort of fibrous rope would be used, and like sinew it would be soaked till it relaxed, wound around the beam then allowed to dry so it contracts to a better grip then could be done by hand.  Sinew seems to be for more delicate operations such as bows, clothing, binding arrow heads to shafts, binding early stone tool heads to hafts. ect.

  8. Are there any Australian TFC players that know of a generally lag free server I can join.  There was cactus retreat but it has since died a while ago, every other server I join has a 1 second lag delay making it unplayable.I would love to host my own server but lack the monetary means to rent a server powerful enough and past experiences have told me it is near impossible to rely on donations to keep a small server going.

  9. Don't want to spoil the fun of praising people, good work on the part of the devteam not being questioned - but do we really need another 'Self-proclaimed spokesman for the community thanking the developers in an open letter' thread on a single page of the forum? It's nice that people are thankful and appreciative, but I really believe one active praise thread was working just well.

If one of these threads popped up everyday I wouldn't mind.  The devs of this modpack deserve all the praise they can get, I doubt they get enough donations to compensate them for the amount of time they could be doing other things.

  10. I like the idea of different parts as well...but I want sinew as a low-tech replacement for string, and the ability to extract fat from the animals for the purpose of soap and candle making.  Of course, none of this has anything to do with smoking meat...sooooo....

you can make string easily with just some clay for a spindle, sheep and a knife.  Sinew was never really used like a string, it was more used for a binding as you would soak it and when it dries it contracts to become tighter then a normal knot.

  11. Well, I've found no evidence suggesting that you can make a functional broadaxe out of stone.  Inclusion of broadaxes would be fine by me, but they'd have to be metal.  That being said...it's really not that hard to make a working shelter with a handsaw.  Personally, I'd be interested to see sticks being used for more.  Using a stone hammer to drive tool-handle width sticks into the ground would allow one to make a decent frame in which to pile more sticks for rudimentary walls.  Sticks can easily fuel a well designed rocket stove.  sticks by themselves make a pretty poor, but still somewhat effective weapon...anyway...enough derailing.

yeah...metal broad axes would make sense.

I would love sticks to work the same way planks do at the moment.  I use planks to frame and hold up cobble stone walls all the time, would be nice to make early game defences.

  12. An FTB modpack with complimenting mods like smart moving would go a long way.  A standardized set of mods would allow server admins to create and run servers more easily.  TFC has a severe lack of servers, especially for me as an Australian player.  Every server I have joined has a 1 second lag and SSP feels hollow when you have no interaction.

  13. Earlier versions allowed you to make planks with a normal axe.  But it was felt this made early game too easy so was removed and you need to get metal first now.  TFC is not about realism it's about pseudo-realism while still maintaining a balanced tech tree.

  14. Great idea, salt is frankly a major pain.  I'd like to see more methods, like drying, fruit preserves, pickling with vinegar ect.  Also like some way of "insulating" an area to keep it cooler, it is very hard to cool a place down aside from going to a colder climate which has it's own problems.

  15. I think the underlying issue here is that skipping nights with a bed is almost-cheating-risk-free, but hiding in a hole all night is alt-tab-and-check-reddit-boring. Requiring a firepit nearby would help, as would requiring the bed be sheltered from the sky. Another alternative would be something like Somnia to simulate gametime while you sleep, which would force you to build a zombie-proof shelter.

Edit: with a quick test Somnia seems to work with TFC, including straw hide beds. I'm surprised

It's not cheating at all really, aslong as you have a secure shelter. in real life most people sleep during the night time and don't spend weeks on end awake blacksmithing so skipping the night I don't feel is cheating..  Somnia would be great for the safety aspect and I am definitely going to add that to my client but really the crux of the issue is the respawn unsetting.

  16. I like the lit firepit idea. Perhaps the bedroll skips precisely as much time as the fuel provides to keep the firepit lit, until dawn of course. Having a tamed wolf with you could provide a similar function!

Can't comment on spawn points as I only play on Hardcore, what with being a man and all.

I never thought about the fuel time, it would mean farming longer burning wood types have more value. My current game I am playing suedo hardcore, meaning if I die the world I die in becomes a testing world and I move onto a new seed.  I never use the actual hardcore mode as it doesn't matter how you die, I have been killed twice by smart movement suffocation glitches which would have been unfair and annoying.

  17. I find myself having to travel quite alot, I have slowly amassed an outpost network of temporary shelters to get to places I need to go.  Unfortunately everytime I want to sleep using a temporary bed I carry with me has the effect of sending me back to spawn if I die and forcing me to walk 8000 blocks to get back to base or cheating and teleporting myself back.  I know a mod in one of the FTB packs had a sleeping bag that allowed you to skip the night while not resetting your spawn point but this felt cheaty as you could just spam right click just before dusk allowing you to skip the night without having to set up camp and protect yourself. The bedroll could be crafted like a normal bed, but instead of wood you use straw, and one of the wool pieces could be leather so you have to get atleast a metal saw before you can craft it, I say this because I think early game hiding in a hole for fear of your life is really part of this mod and allowing you to just skip the night would too much of an advantage early game.Another mechanic of this would be it would need to detect a fire pit within 5ish blocks around it, and must have a solid block above it to represent heat and shelter.  This way you need to stop a couple of minutes before night time to setup camp before being able to sleep the night away and punishes you if you are tardy and are forced to setup camp in the dark. What do you think?

  18. I would like snares to be a thing to catch rabbits, but for deers to be rarer, and cows/sheep harder to breed so early game you are hesitant about killing that excess animal. How you would go about this is either adding a random infertility system where breeding does not work 100% or animals have a chance at becoming infertile.

Anyway, if you're going to add trapping you have to add curing and methods of storing meat long-term.

I believe other curing methods such as smoking, drying, and pickling have already been discussed and planned for future updates.Snare traps seem like the best option, can be made of jute or thread from sheep and crafted with sticks, would give enough meat to provide a good supply of protein but not overwhelm you with the need to cure it.The reason I hate the way meat is now is that killing one large animal such as a deer gives you so much it becomes a pain to manage.  Small game would provide enough but not too much maybe 3 meals meaning I don't have to worry about curing and keeping a dark cellar.I know TFC has made it clear that it does not follow historical accuracy, but logically snare traps are also the most common throughout the world.  Because they are so simple to make.Edit: When body heat becomes a thing perhaps a rabbit pelt lined leather coat may become a thing also.
