      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Decreased sapling / wild grass spawning

20 posts in this topic

I find myself having to make sure I log into my server every day (even when I don't /want/ to play) just to knock down all the grass and saplings to make sure my farm doesn't get overshadowed by trees and ruined.

Having 5-10 saplings spawn each day on my small peninsula is unrealistic and a pain in the arse :)

now i dont know if saplings spawn at random, but why not tear down every last sapling, then plant your own tree farm on the other side of the island, would leave you with no wild growth of trees ±D

This bug is a very big problem in your case, FMZ. For now the saplings spawn like what you saw. You need to wait and see if the devs change something. They surely will, because we aren't allowed to make farms this way.

Just replace all dirt with stone in a large radius around your home.

or do as I have done and begin my underground city!

I am trying to mitigate some of the issue by using gravel around my farmland, but it's still a pain.

I also cut down all the trees in a path through the forest to a couple of spots where I have mines going. 3 days later, the paths are gone, totally covered over by trees again. I think decreasing how many saplings to about 10% of the current rate would do wonders (If we want trees we can easily plant them) but also the much-proposed idea of only having saplings spawn in a radius around current trees would be awesome. That way forests can very slowly encroach upon the plains if left unchecked.

I hope to eventually see a reworked code around FOREST related stuff.

I hope to see trees that grow tall, and leave a shadowy plane below their corona.

I hope to see forests, that expand outwards, rather then randomly covering all of the land everywhere at once.

I hope to see more people hoping nice ideas like you because these are all good suggestions.

Please.... no more trees..... Even the sequoia that aren't supposed to spawn at all are going nuts. With such a huge (and beautiful) map tree growth is waaay to fast. 2 or 3 years would be a minimum. The proliferation makes trees worth nothing much like vanilla MC and removes a key challenge of the game.... distance. When you have to range far afield for more trees it adds challenge. Sorry for the rambly whine... anyone else feel this way?

Well, Sequoia saplings are supposed to be available, they just don't grow in the 2x2 gigantic formation. Just saying.

And WELCOME TO THE FORUMS, Bbushh!

,Also, this is my 1000th post. Yay!

Yeah, I agree with this. After all this only happens to sequoias...It's worth it...And I would like if after other years the small sequoia tree could grow again and become a giant sequoia tree.

Also:

Wait, it was mine? What? I don't remember such a similar thing...

I agree with nerfing or redoing trees, but grass is actually require quite thin balance as a system. Because animals eat it, and you usually don't want them to starve.

Oh? I am pretty sure it was my status update. I could be wrong though. It might have been yours.

Thanks for the welcome Kimbble and Wolf. Multi stage tree growth would be amazing but that might be "moon shooting". Howz about greatly nerfing sapling growth speed (2 or 3 years), leave sapling spontaneous generation but no sapling drop when whacking foliage? This would make saplings a bit more valuable as you would have to gather them rather than getting piles of the little horrors when gathering sticks. That way our good friend Bioxx wouldn't need to do too much recoding (fat lot that I know about coding :/)

Well, multi-stage growing means more CPU usage. I like this, but I honestly don't remember why it isn't implemented.

And saplings are good for now. I had this idea: you can get saplings by cutting the right branches with a knife, but for now there aren't branches and this idea would be overpowered, because a tree is full of branches.

It's actually like having chests or forges instead of every single tree, I'd not said it will be too intensive. Multi-stage growth is just looks mighty weird with blocky trees, especially trees minecraft-style.

Well, it is done with fruit trees, and they look fine, so I really don't see the problem of aesthetis here.
