Intended or not, i find this quite funny. Getting sulfur is a no-brainer now. It spawns so fast

this happened to me too. To be honest i never mined sulfur before so i wonder if you need a pickaxe for it? I tried to mine it with no tool and it broke quite fast, but no drops.

 You can combine it with saltpeter and charcoal to make gunpowder - which seems to be useless at the moment, due to the barrel rewrite power kegs are gone (Or at least i couldn't figure out how to make them with the new barrels)

So even if the keg would be working, you would need a huge amount of sulfur AND saltpeter AND charcoal to fill up ONE keg with gunpowder?

I think in the older versions you needed 64 gunpowder for a powder keg, but i could easily see that being changed for the new barrels.

 

and while i do like that sulfur exists again this may be over compensating.

When powder kegs were working in 78, they took 4 stacks of gunpowder (256 Total).

 

This is completely justified if you've ever actually set one off and seen the size of the explosion. These things are mountain destroyers.

Lol no, it's just how Minecraft calculates explosions. Somebody actually managed to reproduce it in vanilla as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/2gds12/150_strength_explosion/

Wubbi demonstrated that each ray from the source of the explosion has a variable strength. Therefore vanilla minecraft explosions do not reproduce the same crater shape every time. But in the screenshot above, the crater is very symmetric. 

 

Pity to learn that the gunpowder keg is not in the game (yet).

The crazy sulfur spawning is intended, mainly because the hard part is usually finding lava in the first place.

We do. But considering how ridiculously expensive it is to make the keg, you rarely ever see more than 1 being set off at a time.

 

They also do not daisy-chain. So setting more than 1 off at a time takes a lot of effort.

The main problem with vanilla explosions is the RAM usage, explosions eat a lot of that.
