      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Sculpting Skill

8 posts in this topic

Hello I'm suggesting a new skill: the sculpting skill

Basically it is a masonary and woodworking skill in one.

The skill effects the chisel and how it works. You gain it by doing things with the chisel like making bricks etc.

First if your skill is low only the smooth and stair mode of the chisel are unlocked. Also if you are making bricks there is a ~60% chance that the rock breaks without resulting in a brick. If you are chiseling a block there is a low chance (2% no skill - 0.001% max skill) that the block you are editing completely breaks.

The percentages could also be effected by the type of metal your chisel is made of.

So what do you think? :D

I like the skill idea but I'm not completely sold on the effects it brings.

The unlocking of modes is good, smoothing and stairs are basic needing no skill, slab would be next and detailed last.

I would say the chance to fail at making bricks is to high, maybe 40% with no skill, and 0% at adept or expert. I don't think this should be a limiting thing, just something to add a touch of believability. Bricks shouldn't be hard to make.

As for the block breaking with low skill, I'm not sure, I don't really like it but I don't have an alternative.

Over all though, yes, lets make this happen.

I love the chisel, unfortunately I am terrible in using it, So I will hate any thing that even hints on making it even hard for me to use it.

I think chiseled blocks are already so dependent on a real world skill, that they do not need a in game skill simulator. I see people making beautiful creations and I know with time I would be able to copy something, but is not the same.

So no, I say no to a chisel in game skill.

Agreed. I am mot super bad at using the chisel, but chiseling detail blocks is already difficult/tedious enough. Adding the possibility of loosing a perfectly crafted block just because of a low skill number would break the system for me.

You could use blueprints to save your work and that's actually not very believable

The skill system is awesome but I'm not totally sold on this idea. The reasons why have pretty much already been said but to add something that hasn't, durability loss.  I'm currently building a mostly brick blacksmith and aside from the horror that I would have lost over half my bricks I'd most likely also be on my 2nd chisel. (Bismuth Bronze)  You may fail to shape the stone but you still use the tool.  Things are expensive early game and this would add even more cost and I think really limit what you could potential build early/mid game.

Now I'm not totally against the idea, the unlocking of modes as you get more skill I think is a great one.  I really enjoyed that with the hoe and when I finally saw the coveted nutrients mode it opened up a whole new world!  (Not literally but made my rotations easier)  It just really comes down to the loss of materials and durability damage the tool would take that is putting me off but like Regnilse I don't have an alternative to suggest.

What if, at expert level, you could "undo" a detailing, 1 mini-block at a time. To make it believable, we could say an expert sculptor is less likely to make mistakes. I'm constantly finding myself accidentally detailing 1 too many miniblocks, and having to start over.

Or that he is filling in the mistake with something, maybe it would need mortar or something.
